BYD is preparing to strengthen its presence in the Indian automotive market with the launch of its first plug-in hybrid SUV. The company has officially confirmed that the new model will be unveiled on June 9, marking a significant step in its electrification strategy for India.
The upcoming SUV will be powered by BYD's advanced DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV technology, which combines the efficiency of an electric powertrain with the flexibility of a conventional petrol engine. While BYD has not yet revealed the exact model, industry speculation suggests that the launch could either be the Atto 2 or the more premium Sealion 6.
The BYD Atto 2 is expected to be positioned as a practical and efficient hybrid SUV. It features a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh battery pack. Depending on the battery configuration, BYD claims a combined driving range of 928 km and 998 km respectively under the WLTP testing cycle, making it an attractive option for buyers seeking long-distance efficiency with reduced fuel consumption.
On the other hand, the BYD Sealion 6 represents a more premium offering within the brand's SUV lineup. It is available with either a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine or a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, paired with 18.3 kWh and 26.6 kWh battery options. Thanks to its larger battery capacity and advanced hybrid system, the Sealion 6 delivers an impressive maximum claimed driving range of up to 1,092 km, positioning it as one of the longest-range plug-in hybrid SUVs in its segment.
With the launch just around the corner, the Indian market is set to welcome another electrified SUV option from BYD, offering consumers a blend of electric mobility, extended range, and reduced dependence on conventional fuel.
