Toyota is preparing an aggressive expansion strategy for the Indian market, and one of the biggest highlights will be the launch of the Toyota Corolla Cross. The global SUV is expected to make its India debut by late 2028 or early 2029, bringing hybrid powertrains, premium features, and Toyota's latest safety technologies.
The Corolla Cross is expected to compete in the premium midsize SUV segment against rivals such as the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, and other upcoming hybrid SUVs.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) recently announced an investment of over USD 3 billion in India as part of its long-term expansion strategy.
The investment will support:
Two new manufacturing facilities
Expanded production capacity
New SUV and MPV launches
Increased localisation
One plant will be established in Maharashtra, while another will come up in Bengaluru.
The upcoming Toyota Corolla Cross will reportedly become the first vehicle to roll out from Toyota's new Aurangabad manufacturing facility.
Production is expected to begin around late 2028, with market launch likely following shortly after.
Local production could also help Toyota price the SUV competitively against established rivals.
Globally, the Corolla Cross is based on Toyota's TNGA-C (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, which also underpins several international Toyota models.
The platform is designed to deliver:
Better ride quality
Improved handling
Higher structural rigidity
Enhanced crash safety
Better hybrid integration
Internationally, the Corolla Cross is available with several engine options depending on the market.
These include:
1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol
2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol
1.8-litre petrol-hybrid
2.0-litre petrol-hybrid
The 1.8-litre petrol engine develops around 140 bhp and 172 Nm of torque.
While Toyota has not confirmed the India-spec powertrain lineup, the company is expected to prioritise strong hybrid technology, considering the growing demand for fuel-efficient SUVs.

The latest Corolla Cross receives a significantly updated interior with modern technology and comfort features.
Expected highlights include:
10.5-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system
12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Connected car technology
Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates
Dual-zone automatic climate control
Rear AC vents
Wireless phone charger
Powered driver's seat
Ambient lighting
Premium JBL sound system
These features position the Corolla Cross as a premium offering in Toyota's SUV lineup.
Toyota has equipped the global Corolla Cross with an extensive list of safety features.
Expected equipment includes:
Up to 9 airbags
ABS with EBD
Vehicle Stability Control
Brake Assist
Traction Control
Hill Start Assist
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
ISOFIX child seat mounts
The SUV also features Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes multiple Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for improved driver safety.
The Corolla Cross combines SUV practicality with modern styling.
Exterior highlights include:
Large trapezoidal front grille
Slim LED projector headlamps
LED Daytime Running Lights
LED fog lamps
Sculpted front bumper
Silver skid plates
Roof rails
Black body cladding
Squared wheel arches
LED tail lamps
Powered tailgate
The overall design gives the Corolla Cross a rugged yet premium appearance suitable for both urban and highway driving.
Apart from the Corolla Cross, Toyota has several new products planned for the Indian market over the next few years.
Upcoming launches are expected to include:
Lower-spec Toyota Innova Hycross
Next-generation Toyota Fortuner
Toyota's version of Maruti Suzuki's upcoming electric MPV
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ
Toyota Corolla Cross
This expanded lineup will strengthen Toyota's presence across multiple SUV and MPV segments.
The Toyota Corolla Cross could become one of the brand's most important launches in India when it arrives around 2028-29. With hybrid powertrain options, premium interiors, advanced safety features, and local manufacturing, the SUV has the potential to attract buyers looking for a reliable, fuel-efficient, and feature-packed premium SUV.
If Toyota prices it competitively, the Corolla Cross could emerge as a strong contender against the Mahindra XUV 7XO and other premium SUVs in the segment.
