VinFast’s ambitions for the Indian electric vehicle market have taken a significant step forward with the filing of a design patent for a new electric scooter. The patented design closely resembles the VinFast Viper, a sporty urban e-scooter already available in Vietnam and select international markets. While a design patent does not confirm an immediate launch, it strongly indicates that the Vietnamese EV manufacturer is preparing to enter India’s rapidly growing electric two-wheeler segment. With demand for premium electric scooters on the rise, VinFast’s latest move could introduce another strong competitor to an already crowded market.
The scooter showcased in the patent features a sharp and modern design with aggressive styling elements, including angular LED headlamps, a sculpted front apron, sporty alloy wheels, and a sleek side profile. The design also hints at premium hardware such as front and rear disc brakes, a single-sided rear swingarm, and a digital instrument cluster that is expected to support smartphone connectivity, navigation, and other smart features. These design cues suggest that VinFast intends to position the scooter as a premium urban commuter aimed at young, technology-focused buyers.
Although VinFast has not officially revealed the India-spec technical specifications, the scooter is expected to share its mechanical package with the global Viper model. It is likely to feature a hub-mounted BLDC electric motor producing around 3.5 to 5 kW of peak power, delivering brisk city performance with a top speed of approximately 75–85 km/h. A lithium-ion battery pack could provide a real-world riding range of around 100–120 km on a single charge, making it suitable for daily commuting. Other expected features include multiple riding modes, regenerative braking, keyless access, full LED lighting, and connected vehicle technology.
India has become one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets, particularly in the electric scooter segment. Rising fuel prices, government incentives, and increasing awareness about sustainable mobility have accelerated the adoption of electric two-wheelers. VinFast appears to be targeting this opportunity with a product that combines attractive styling, modern technology, and practical performance. The company is also expected to explore local manufacturing or assembly to remain competitive on pricing while strengthening its long-term presence in the country.
Once launched, the VinFast scooter will compete directly against popular electric scooters such as the Ola S1 Pro, Ather 450X, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and Hero Vida V2. To stand out in this highly competitive segment, VinFast will need to offer an attractive combination of performance, features, pricing, and after-sales support. Industry estimates suggest that the scooter could be priced between ₹1.2 lakh and ₹1.8 lakh (ex-showroom), depending on the battery variant and features offered.
While VinFast has not officially confirmed a launch timeline, the patent filing is a strong indication that the company is laying the groundwork for its India debut. The coming months are expected to bring more clarity regarding product specifications, localisation plans, dealership networks, and pricing. If executed well, VinFast’s entry could intensify competition in India’s electric scooter market, providing buyers with another premium and feature-rich alternative in the rapidly evolving EV space.
